How can you use this time to build healthier habits for a happier life?
So much of life is particularly uncertain right now. Though, to be honest, life is always uncertain, and these unusual circumstances surrounding Covid 19 have brought the unpredictable nature of life to the forefront of everyone’s minds. How can we use this time to prioritize habits that support our well-being in the midst of time focused on survival, looming questions, and grasping for hope?
Consider weaving into your week, healthy habits and routines that are proven to make people happier. Here are 7 key habits that have been shown to make a noticeable difference in boosting happiness:
1. Exercise a little bit every day.
Studies have shown that 30 minutes of exercise at least 3 times/week can make a huge positive impact on your mental health. How can you make sure you are adding exercise into your daily routine? (It helps to pick something FUN, establish an accountability partner, etc.)
2. Getting outside a bit every day.
20 minutes a day will boost your baseline mental health (you can combine outside time and exercise for more efficiency!) A morning walk can be particularly beneficial to clear your mind, or bit of gardening, if you have access to a patio or yard. A lovely outdoor activity in the Springtime is to spend a few minutes in the same place every day observing the daily changes in the plants, the weather, and/or noting the variety of sounds you can hear… all of these activities connect the outdoors with the below aspect of mindfulness.
3. Practicing mindfulness
A little time meditating (focusing on the here and now through paying attention to your breath or noticing your thoughts) goes a long way in helping your brain (literally) grow, focus, and problem solve.
4. Reflecting
Spend time noting moments, experiences, acts, and people for whom we are grateful.
5. sleep
Get plenty of sleep each night! (7-8 hours minimum/night)
6. Be Kind
Spend time doing acts of kindness for others
7. Making social connections
Build relationships with friends, neighbors and strangers! Saying hello to neighbors and strangers (from a safe distance) on your daily walks can actually boost your happiness! Connecting with loved ones via phone or video chat is essential in these isolating times.
What would it mean for you to commit to adding 1-2 of these habits into your regular routine?
How can you make that happen?
While establishing these new habits, remember to be kind to yourself; habits aren’t established overnight. It may take a little time, some support from a friend or mentor, and some accountability to be consistent in your new habits. Stick with it- you are worth it!
